5 Best Apps for Learning Jump Rope
Aug 27, 2024Devin Meek
When I started my first jump rope team back in the early 1990s, Apple was still just a struggling computer company, and jump rope was just a fringe activity practiced by kids on the playground and a few of us crazy jump rope competitors.
25 years later, we have the app store, and jump rope has gone mainstream as fitness pros and researchers have discovered the benefits of jump rope for everything from increasing bone density to improving memory.
Jump rope is now a core component of CrossFit and many other mainstream fitness programs.
I've had a chance now to use many of the jump rope apps you can find in Android and Apple App stores (disclaimer: I'm an avid iPhone user, but I did include some Android apps here). Here's my review of my top 5 favorites.

Yes, we're putting our own app first. We rebuilt it from the ground up this year, and we wouldn't have done that if we didn't think it was the best one out there. The Elite Jumps Jump Rope App works for every jumper, from your first bounce to advanced tricks.
Quick Summary: Prop your phone against a wall and start jumping. The app counts every rep through your camera, scores your form, and recommends the right rope length for you. No watch, no sensor, no special rope.
The Good: Auto-counting runs entirely on your phone, so no video leaves your device. Form Analysis scores your hands, feet, and body position, then recommends a rope length matched to your height and style. The app picks a workout for you every day, with six training styles to choose from: Endurance Engine, HIIT Burn, Mixed Conditioning, Recovery & Mobility, Speed & Agility, and Strength. You also get a full library of tutorials and tricks, weekly goals, a streak calendar that fills in every day you show up, and 23 achievements to unlock. Calorie estimates account for your body weight and the rope in your hands, so a weighted rope session counts differently than a speed rope one. The app is free to download on Android and iOS, and you can try everything free for 7 days.
The Bad: Form Analysis, the custom workout builder, and the full course library are part of Elite Jumps Pro, so you'll need a subscription after the trial to keep them. Auto-counting also needs a spot to prop your phone and enough room to stay in frame. And the app doesn't connect to heart rate monitors or other biometric devices.
Exclusively for Apple Watch, Jump Rope Fit uses advanced jump detection technology to track your jumps and sync workout data with the Health app.
Quick Summary: An Apple Watch app that counts jumps, tracks workouts, and syncs data with Apple Health to help you stay on top of your fitness goals.
The Good: Provides live jump counts, monitors heart rate and calories burned, and offers post-workout summaries. Perfect for creating effective jump rope workouts anywhere—at home, in the gym, or on the go.
The Bad: Limited to Apple Watch users.
Available on: Apple Watch
A highly-rated app for fitness enthusiasts, particularly those who enjoy jump rope workouts with real-time tracking and gamified features.
Quick Summary: YaoYao is an intuitive app that tracks jump rope exercises using your device's motion sensors, offering detailed statistics on jumps, calories burned, and workout time. It also includes fun game-like elements to keep you motivated.
The Good: Accurately tracks your jumps, provides detailed workout stats, integrates with Apple Health, and offers various game modes and customizable workout settings. It’s visually appealing and keeps the experience engaging.
The Bad: Requires an Apple Watch for the most accurate tracking. Some features are exclusive to the paid version, and it’s primarily focused on individual workouts without social or community features.
Don't be fooled by the low number of reviews (6 reviews at time of writing). This was an easy choice as the best jump rope app. Very innovative and well thought out. Geared to all audiences… from playground, competition, to training for various sports like boxing.
Quick summary: Offers workouts that target sport and training goals for athletes or fitness fanatics. For those looking to learn jump rope tricks it provides over 200 skills and combinations in 4 different skill levels.
The Good: The app is helpful for a large audience who may have an interest in jump rope. Easy to navigate with simple and clean pages. Each trick starts with a page that has a written description and helpful hints. A highly skilled athlete demonstrates the skill with the sound of the rope moving. The user is given the ability to play the video-recorded trick in regular speed and in slow motion. A cool feature enables the user to move frame by frame to study how the trick is done. This app even provides access to the top-performing jump rope equipment.
The Bad: This app does have a fee, but many of the tricks are free.
Available on: iPhone
This app offers a comprehensive list of jump rope skills set in levels 1 to 6, as well as many other helpful categories. Geared toward anyone who wants to learn new jump rope tricks.
The Good: Easy to navigate, Good quality video footage and audio description. Shows skills from different angles. front, back and sides. Tricks are separated very well into jumping skill categories. Demonstrated by a top level jumper.
The Bad: Must pay to view most skills. Very few free skills.
Available on: iPhone
